Dehydrated Food

Broccoli chips blend perfectly with a great selection of healthy recipes with various foods you can dehydrate

Taking vegetables first, our super popular zucchini chips, together with smoked paprika version and cucumber chips, should be in your pantry at all times for whenever you feel like snacking on something extra healthy.

Best Dehydrated Food

Getting into the sweet side of dehydrating, as we know in our lifestyle, the best fruits to enjoy is all of the berries. And I have dried some in the dehydrator for you to try.

I have to admit. Dehydrated fruits are the best-dehydrated food you can have. They are naturally sweetened, used often, eaten independently, or added to your granolas or any desserts you will bake.

The best of the best are our dehydrated strawberries, out of which I have even made a strawberry powder to sprinkle on top of your chia puddings or cakes

Dehydrated blueberries, together with dried raspberries, on the other hand, are deliciously chewy if you dry them whole.

Mixing them all is a perfect back-to-school idea for making various Fruit Roll ups

Dehydrated Broccoli for Camping and More Food

To top this all up, you have to try and make our churro with cinnamon or plain pork rinds, which are great as a snack for camping, bbq, or even grilling events.

Broccoli

Broccoli, one of the top vegetables on the nutrition scale, is a must in our lifestyle, even though not all love it. Especially when it comes to our kids, one assurance I have to make is that once you make our dehydrated broccoli chips, you will never have a problem with your kids eating broccoli.

Raw Broccoli Nutrition

Their low-calorie intake, almost no fat, high water content, and broccoli is a good source of vitamins C, K, and B, folate and give you the proper daily nutrition.

1 Cup Broccoli Nutrition

One cup of raw broccoli contains only 4 grams of carbohydrates and 2 grams of fiber, bringing you to 2 grams of net carbs per cup.

With only 25 grams of calories, 0 fat, and 3 grams of proteins, there is no argument why we need this nutritious vegetable in our daily diet.

Broccoli Calories

One fantastic point is the number of calories raw broccoli contains.

1 Cup of Broccoli contains only 25 grams of calories, which is rare in your food.

You know precisely what that means. You can eat them all day and still have a calorie deficit.

Dehydrated Broccoli Chips Nutrition

Considering our recipe, I have dehydrated 3 cups of raw broccoli. After drying, you get two cups of dehydrated broccoli, with four servings, each containing ¼ of a cup.

One portion of broccoli chips contains 19 calories, 3 grams of carbohydrates, and 2 grams of fiber. Those healthy chips idea is perfect with 0 grams of fat and 3 grams of protein.

Keto chips with 1 gram of net carbs per portion. How fabulous.

Baked Broccoli

Baked or oven roasted broccoli has been popular for a long time. Those have inspired me to go ahead with our recipe.

We were recently on holiday, and I fell in love with baked baby broccoli. I have ordered it in every restaurant we visited as an appetizer.

They were delicious, no doubt. The only problem I had was the oil content. Every restaurant served that lovely baked broccoli with so much oil I always had to dry half of it with a paper napkin.

I knew there must be a better version of enjoying that baked broccoli without oil.

So I went the complete opposite and made them without a drop of oil.

Is Dehydrate Broccoli Good For You?

Broccoli chips are very healthy as long as you follow specific steps and the way you prepare them.

As mentioned above, baked broccoli filled with unnecessary extra oil differs from how to enjoy it.

If you follow our recipe for dehydrated broccoli chips, you get a super delicious snack and extra nutrition-dense food everyone will love, and most of the vitamins and minerals will stay in.

 How To Dry Broccoli

There are various ways you can dry your broccoli.

Ways to dry broccoli

  • Bake Broccoli in Oven – simply on low heat until crispy
  • Air Fry Broccoli – quick and easy way at 180 Celsius or 350 Fahrenheit for 7 minutes
  • Dehydrating Broccoli – a bit prolonged, but the way you get to keep all of the nutrition.

Broccoli Chips

Let’s get to the nitty gritty of preparing our broccoli for a perfect chips snack.

I have prepared our recipe the most straightforward way, without any flavorings, so you get the best out of the broccoli flavor. One thing I would do differently is to keep the stalk longer.

After dehydrating, I fell in love with dehydrated broccoli stalks even more than the actual broccoli. They are so good that I will never throw broccoli stalks but collect them for dehydration.

Dehydrated Broccoli

Although our broccoli chips recipe contains no flavorings, there is no reason not to add some.

Plain, unflavored dehydrated broccoli can be used later as an addition to soups, made into a powder, or rehydrated for any meal.

But if you are going for a great snack to nib on, you can pick from the following.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS TO MAKE DEHYDRATED BROCCOLI CHIPS

First Step: Prepare broccoli for dehydrating

First, thoroughly wash and dry your broccoli and discharge broccoli leaves.

The smaller your broccoli florets are cut, the less drying time it will take for you to dehydrate fully. Segment your broccoli into small green florets leaving the stems as well. The stems are extra delicious once dried.

There is an option of blanching broccoli before dehydrating it. If you want to go that route, pour your whole broccoli head into the boiling water for 5 minutes and follow the rest of the instructions.

Second Step: Layer

Arrange the broccoli pieces onto the drying trays. Make sure they do not overlap. I have used two and a half trays for medium size broccoli, approximately 3 cups of raw-cut pieces. If your pieces are small and fall through the rack, you can add pieces of parchment paper under them.

Third Step: Dehydrate

Close the lid of the food dehydrator, set the temperature to 70 Celsius or 150 Fahrenheit for approximately 6 to 8 hours, depending on the size and let the broccoli dehydrate. Some dehydrators do not have the temperature settings, so just switch them on.

Make sure you swap your trays every 2 hours to get all broccoli pieces to dry faster and evenly. You can even turn the florets toward the end of drying.

TIPS AND TRICKS

  • Blanching – blanch pieces of broccoli to preserve broccoli color and texture if you wish
  • Broccoli Stalks – leave the stalk on as they have got a delicious taste after drying
  • Broccoli Powder – You can go even further and fine powder your dehydrated broccoli in a magic bullet or a coffee grinder.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

How To Use Dehydrated Broccoli Chips?

Even though broccoli chips are delicious on their own, you can pick from one of our sauces to serve them with:

Can I Dehydrate Frozen Broccoli?

Yes, you can dehydrate frozen broccoli. Before dehydrating, it is advisable to thaw the frozen broccoli first to ensure even drying.

Once thawed, you can spread the broccoli florets on a dehydrator tray or a baking sheet and then proceed with the dehydration process.

How Do I De-clump Frozen Broccoli?

Once you thaw the broccoli, gently separate the clumps with your hands or a fork. Gently break apart any large lumps or chunks, keeping the individual florets intact.

How Long to Blanch Broccoli?

If you would like to preserve the color of bright green broccoli additionally, you can blanch them before dehydrating them.

Place the whole broccoli head into the boiling water and blanch for 5 minutes. Take it out using colander or sieve and immediately submerge it into the icing water as I did with our broccoli salad

Fully dry the whole broccoli and continue with our steps.

How Do I Make Broccoli Crispy?

The smaller your broccoli pieces are, the crunchier they get after dehydrating. You can even slice broccoli stems with your mandoline into small thin pieces to get perfect crunches.

Adding grated cheese helps intensify the crispiness even more.

How Do I Make Broccoli Stay Crunchy?

Storing your dehydrated broccoli properly in a closed glass container will keep it crunchy all the time. Leaving them on a plate, depending on the humidity of your house and the moisture, they might soften up.

How Do I Store Dehydrated Broccoli for Storage?

Keep the containers away from direct sunlight on your pantry shelf or a dry place in your house. Store dried florets in an airtight container or canning jar with a lid.

You can even condition your broccoli chips for long-term food storage.

Conditioning means placing your broccoli pieces loosely into the glass jar, and every day for the next seven days, gently shake them and look for any molds. This will allow air to circulate inside the jar.

After those seven days, they should be perfectly preserved, and broccoli will last months.

How Do I Rehydrate Dry Vegetables?

You can soak the florets in the water overnight to fully rehydrate and use them further.

If you are in a hurry, soak in hot water for 15-20 minutes.

Once rehydrated, add them to your casserolestew or any other meal you are preparing.

Can I Freeze Dehydrated Broccoli?

You can freeze broccoli chips in freezer bags, but as they are great stored in your pantry, there is no need to freeze them.
