Deliciously smooth, sweet, thick, extra creamy, and velvety, this sugar-free homemade eggnog recipe made with almond milk is a holiday classic with only 1 gram of carbs.

Fully low-carb, gluten-free, and diabetic-friendly keto drink will be the one during your Christmas, Easter, or any other holiday season. You will impress all your friends and loved ones with no difference from the regular eggnog taste.

Christmas keto recipes

Where I come from, chilled eggnog and challah bread, meringue cookies, vanilla crescent cookies, and gingerbread cookies need to be on the table for Christmas and Easter.

From the savory part, our sauerkraut soup and potato salad needs to be there as well.

Easter Eggnog

We should not forget this delicious sugar-free eggnog drink is also a must for the Easter holidays.

During this time of the year, everything is about eggs and what to make from them.

Sugar-free keto eggnog recipe

I love eggnog since my childhood. Delicious eggnog has been my number one drink, not only during the holiday season. As we have transitioned to a low-carb lifestyle, I have stopped.

The first few years as we have experimented with a low carb and sugar free lifestyle, eggnog was just taken out of our kitchen. We all know how much sugar is involved in traditional eggnog.

Later, I realized that anything, well almost anything, can be transformed into a keto diet. This made me to rethink of introducing homemade keto eggnog to our lifestyle again.

Are there carbs in eggnog?

Classic eggnog is very far from Keto.

Loaded with sugar and regular milk will add significant carbs to your calculations.

The great news is that if you make a keto version of homemade eggnog following our great recipe, you will get the exact taste, texture, aroma, creaminess, and thickness for just 1 gram of carbohydrate per portion.

And trust me, it tastes identical to the store bought eggnog. I have made this recipe several times, and none of my friends realized it is a low-carb eggnog.

Homemade eggnog is always better than any traditional eggnog recipe.

How many carbs are in homemade eggnog?

Our homemade keto eggnog makes ten portions containing only 1 gram of carbohydrates for each.

Is raw eggnog keto friendly?

Whether you cook your eggnog or leave it raw, it will always be keto as long as you are using ingredients allowed in our lifestyle.

Not cooking the eggnog is a much easier version, and since we add alcohol into it, it does kind of preserve and kills all that is not needed. So there you go. This will be easy and deliciously creamy as well. Just follow the recipe down below.

If you still prefer to have cooked nog, that is also an option.

All you have to do is follow the same recipe, just use the double boiler and cook it on low heat on a saucepan to prevent curdling the eggs.

First, add milk with sweetener and cook until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat, add the hot milk mixture into the egg, and whisk. Place the mixture back into the saucepan and cook the mixture until all thickens.

What alcohol can go into eggnog?

As I followed and tried to recreate the best recipe from my mum, rum was always a choice, and that is what we like and know.

To me, rum is the best alcohol for eggnog.

The best Rum for eggnog is clear rum, which maintains that beautiful bright yellow color.

But do not get stuck on this. There are other great choices for alcohol in eggnog.

You can pick vodka, brandy, whiskey, or bourbon.

What sweetener is best to use for Keto Eggnog?

As our recipe does not require cooking, picking your sweetener or sugar substitute is easier.

My first suggestion is allulose, as it adds to the creaminess of the drink, and in case you would like to cook this best eggnog, it will stay in perfect consistency.

You can also pick one of the liquid sweeteners, such as our homemade sugar-free simple syrup, condensed milk, or maple syrup.

With maple syrup, you might get a slightly darker color of your eggnog, but an exquisite flavor.

I would not suggest Erythritol as it is difficult to melt without cooking and might crystalize after being in the fridge for a while.

What milk to use for homemade keto eggnog?

As we already know, our milk alternatives are so vast that we can experiment with a few and even add those delicious flavors of nut milk into this easy recipe for eggnog.

My choice is unsweetened almond milk as it has the slightest aroma and enhances the flavor of real eggnog.

Almond milk eggnog is the closest you can get to a traditional eggnog taste.

If you like coconut milk, making homemade keto eggnog with it is also a great option.

Any nut or seed milk will work. It only depends on your choice and taste preference.

You can go for hemp, walnut, hazelnut, and more.

Non-alcoholic recipe for eggnog

As a child, my mum made eggnog on both of those occasions. She has always made sure there is a small bottle for us kids, without alcohol being added.

This was the best time ever. I used to pour this nonalcoholic eggnog drink into tiny small glasses. Never would I leave the glass dirty. I have always made sure I lick the entire glass from each side to get every little drop.

My mum was not pleased with my way of cleaning the glasses, but I could not help it. I had to. I had to get the last drop. And I still do it.

Kid-friendly easy keto eggnog

This perfect low-carb, sugar free eggnog recipe is not only for us adults but also for our kids. All you have to do is follow the recipe and just skip the part about adding rum.

If you still love that rum flavor, you can add rum extract, available in every shop.

With our eggnog popsicles, you can make the kids and some adults happier.

Creamy sugar-free eggnog garnishes

As our recipe contains only vanilla extract, I have more suggestions for you to experiment with.

You can either add those directly into the process or sprinkle them afterward:

Cinnamon is an excellent addition to this beautiful eggnog. Sprinkling on top of the soft peaks of whipped cream gives an additional light flavor of this exquisite spice.

Cocktails with eggnog

To cover everything regarding eggnog, I am adding a few suggestions for making perfect keto cocktails with our eggnog recipe.

Delicious keto drinks with eggnog:

  • Eggnog coffee – add a few drops to our cold brew coffee to enjoy the soft taste of slowly brewed eggnog coffee.
  • Brandy Alexander – add a shot of pure brandy for perfect eggnog.
  • Chocolate eggnog – add a few tablespoons of chocolate syrup.
  • Bourbon eggnog – one to two tablespoons of bourbon.
  • Eggnog latte – to make an eggnog latte, whisk your eggnog together with hot whipped nut milk and coffee.
  • Gingerbread eggnog – adding spices to our gingerbread cookies will transform you into the Christmas feeling.
  • Mrs. Claus cocktail – peppermint schnapps together with chocolate syrup.
  • White chocolate cocktail – adding melted white chocolate chips in.
  • Puerto Rican coquito – swap almond milk with unsweetened coconut milk or coconut cream.

  • Eggnog cake – Instead of water, add eggnog to this coffee cake.

  • Eggnog bread – Swap half of the heavy cream with eggnog on french toast.
  • Bread pudding with eggnog – pour half a cup of eggnog over the bread pudding before baking.

Fourth step: Heavy cream and almond milk

Start adding heavy cream once your egg yolks are whisked together with sweeteners.

Keep whisking and adding cream until everything is combined.

Next comes almond milk or a milk of your choice, which you just pour into the bowl and mix again.

Fifth step: Vanilla, rum, xanthan gum

When milk and heavy cream are mixed, add a splash of vanilla, rum and mix.

Adding xanthan gum is optional, depending on whether you want your eggnog thick.

When adding xanthan gum, keep whisking the whole mixture and keep adding xanthan gum slowly to avoid lumps.

Whisk once again entirely altogether.

Sixth step: Sieve

Using a sieve, let the whole liquid run through it, making sure you catch all the lumps, which might sometimes appear while adding xanthan gum. This will make sure you get beautiful creamy eggnog.

Do not worry if the eggnog needs to be thick enough.

It thickens much more while stored in the fridge.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

How to serve keto eggnog?

As eggnog is a holiday drink, it goes best with keto cookies such as gingerbread cookies, meringue, and vanilla crescents, or pick from an extensive collection of cookie recipes from my blogger friends.

You can also make one of our ice creams or frozen desserts and use eggnog as a sauce – awesomeness.

Sugar-Free Eggnog with Almond Milk in a small glasses.
Sugar-Free Keto Eggnog
How to store keto eggnog?

Storing keto eggnog is super easy. Pour the eggnog into a glass bottle with a cover and store it in the fridge, best on the side door.

How long can you keep keto eggnog?

It depends on which choice you would go for.

If you use our recipe together with alcohol, you can keep it in the fridge for quite a long time. A week or two is excellent. I have sometimes kept it even longer.

But if you will use our version without alcohol, I suggest making the only amount you will consume in the next two to three days. Since this is a non-cooked process, try to use it immediately to be safe.

If you would like to make a big bottle and have it throughout the whole festivity season, run it through the cooking process for the eggs to cook and not worry about some contamination.

Having alcohol inside will undoubtedly conserve the eggnog even if it is not cooked. We have done it all of our life.

Can you freeze keto eggnog?

You can undoubtedly freeze our keto eggnog recipe. Pour it into the mason jar or a bottle if you have space, and store it in the freezer for approximately 6-8 months.

Ensure the liquid is poured only into about ¾ of a container, as it might still expand while freezing.

  1. I noticed that there aren’t any spices such as nutmeg included in the recipe. Wouldn’t this just taste like creamy vanilla milk with rum?

  2. I love eggnog, so I’m very happy to see this recipe. We like to use coconut rum in our eggnog. If you haven’t tried that yet, it is absolutely wonderful.

    • It is, and it is suppose to be drank as a shot. I live in Europe and our way of drinking eggnog is always in a small shot glasses. You could of course add less alcohol if you wish and lan to drinking it other way.
