I came across this lovely way of making coffee a few months ago when a friend visited and started raving about cold press or cold brew coffee. I tried it once and never returned to our ordinary way or a local coffee shop.
What Is a Cold Brew Coffee?
Cold brew coffee has been around for quite a while. It is a process of extracting coffee without a touch of hot water, which is more beneficial to our health and tastes way different from regular hot coffee. In this method, coffee is steeped in cold water for 12-24 hours, depending on your coffee beans. The lighter your coffee beans are, the longer time for coffee brewing is needed.
Originating from Japan, it has been used for centuries as a traditional method of coffee brewing.
It has become more popular in the last few years with different gadgets to make it easier. But I tell you, you do not need any unique gadgets. It is as easy as making lavender tea, lavender lemonade, infused iced tea, flavored water, and rose water recipe. The same steps apply, transforming your coffee into an irresistibly smooth, non-bitter, and flavourful morning drink that gives you energy for the rest of the day.
You might have seen already that there are also wide varieties of cold brew coffee Starbucks style. Have you tried any of those?
What Are the Benefits of Cold-Brewed Coffee?
- 65 – 70% less acidic, and therefore, it is not so harsh on your gut
- Non-bitter taste and lets you drink it without any sweetener.
- It contains a higher amount of antioxidants.
- Is lower in caffeine
- It does not degenerate protective oils surrounding beans.
- You get more robust coffee from much fewer products.
- Much easier and quicker than a hot coffee method
- It lasts for up to 1 week or more.
- Very smooth
- More aromatic
- Much longer brewing time (12-24 Hrs) compared to a standard coffee dripping method (2-3 seconds)
Best Coffee Beans for Cold Brew
Look for types of coffee beans that have a low acidity level to avoid any potential bitterness in the final brew. Opt for medium to dark roast beans, as they tend to bring out the rich and smooth flavors desired in cold brew. Some popular choices include Colombian, Brazilian, and Ethiopian coffee beans.
Cold Brew Coffee Ratio
The cold brew coffee ratio question makes it difficult to answer all in one.
It all depends on your preferences. If you like your coffee strong or mild. But even if you would make a strong concentrated coffee, you can still reduce it by mixing it with water and ice while serving. I use 8oz 2 tablespoons of coffee.
Cold Brewed Methods
- Immersion Brewing – our recipe
- Ice Drip Coffee Brewing – also called Kyoto or Dutch ice dripping – method, where you let water drip slowly into a ground coffee in the span of a few hours.
Immersion Method of Cold Brew Coffee
This is the exact name of the method we are using. Here you soak the coffee in the water and let the brewing last for hours.
Difference Between Iced Coffee and Cold Brew
Iced coffee is a method where regular hot coffee is made using various ways, and subsequently, blocks of ice cubes are added to cool down the drink and make a refreshing beverage.
The cold-brewed method is where coffee is made without touching the heat. With Cold Brew, you are using time instead of heat. The exact recipe we will be making today. The additional benefits I have mentioned above apply.

BASIC STEPS FOR MAKING COLD BREW COFFEE RECIPE
First step: Prepare Ingredients
The easiest recipe, where all you need is coffee and water. Grind the coffee if you have a coffee grinder at home to have it as fresh as possible.
Second Step: Mason Jars
Prepare the mason jar or a jar you have at home. Fill it up entirely with water. Make sure you pick a jar that you can close, and it does not leak, as I do mix it from time to time within those 12-24 hours.
Third Step: Ground or Coarse Coffee
Add that amount of ground coffee beans to the water, depending on how strong you want your coffee to be. I usually use two spoons of ground coffee for 1 (1 pint or 16oz) Mason Jar. This will give me the exact strength I like. Bear in mind I like my coffee less concentrated.
Fourth Step: Close and mix
Close the lid of a Mason Jar and shake it thoroughly. I still shake and remix it a few times during the day for the coffee to get more brewing.
Fifth Step: Store for 24 Hours
Depending on your coffee beans, taste, and preference, store the coffee jar in the fridge for 12 to 24 hours and let the coffee steep. The lighter your beans are, the longer they need to be brewed. I like keeping my jar until the next day, not counting the hours.
Sixth Step: Strain
Once your coffee is brewed, take a muslin cloth placed on top of the filter. Strain the coffee grounds into a clean Mason Jar. Close the lid and put it into the refrigerator. You can keep it for one week or longer and use it daily.
Seventh Step: Ice and water
Once you are ready to serve, filling up the glass with Ice cubes and a bit of cold or room temperature water is best. This will help the concentrated coffee get a lighter and more flavourful taste.
Eighth Step: Serve
Cold-brew coffee or a regular hot brew. Pour the coffee over ice into a glass and enjoy a glass of cold brew coffee. Remember that it still contains caffeine, so do not drink it in the evenings. Or at least that is in my case. I can only drink my coffee until 3 pm. Otherwise, I will not sleep the whole night. It does not matter. I have tried it all.
I love having our churro pork rinds as a snack with my coffee throughout the day. In that case, you do not need to sweeten it at all. Churros will give you all you need.
Ninth Step: Add Keto milk
You can add nut milk, almond or coconut milk, or any of your preferred milk.
And since we will have this coffee, having some super easy coffee cake will be wise. Or try one of the great keto cinnamon pecan cookies. What do you say?
TIPS AND TRICKS
- Whole coffee beans – Use Magic Bullet to grain the coffee.
- Visual – Check the video and post above for more detailed instructions.
- Cold Brew Coffee Concentrate – For more concentration, double or triple the amount of coffee, which you can then mix with water or ice. Use ratio 1 to 4 (4 being coffee). You can also use Coarse Ground Coffee if you still feel that your coffee is bitter.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
What To Serve a Cup of Cold Brew With?
This coffee goes perfectly with our easy bundt cake, where you can choose whatever berries you like. And I can not, not mention our sugar-free white chocolate bar, shortbread cookies, easy berry cake, chocolate covered almonds or spicy brownies that you will for sure love to have as well.
How To Make Cold Brew Concentrate?
If you like to prepare a strong concentrated coffee, I suggest using a ratio of 1 to 4, equaling 1 being the water and 4 being the coffee. This will give you a superb strong concentrate, which you can dilute to your preference.
Can I Make Keto Cold Brew Bulletproof Coffee?
With keto bulletproof coffee, the trick is to melt the oils or ghee together with coffee. If you do make a regular hot coffee, it is easy. But without heating our coffee, this might be a bit tricky.
Here are a few suggestions I have for you to try:
- Melt your preferred ghee, coconut oil, or butter on low heat and pour it straight into the brewed coffee. Do not pour it over the ice because the oils will harden and become coarse.
- Place coffee and oils, which have been melted at room temperature, in your Magic Bullet or a blender and blend them thoroughly.
- Warm up your coffee on low and add your preferred fat.
Any of those three suggestions should work for you to enjoy a perfect glass of cold brew bulletproof coffee.
Can I Make French Press Cold Brew Coffee From This?
Absolutely yes. It is very similar to using our easy-to-make Mason Jar method. Just pour water and coffee into a French Press and let it brew for 24 hours. In the end, press the French press and push the coffee into the base of the jar. Pour over your ice, serve, and enjoy.
With a French press method, try to use the coffee as soon as brewing is finished. Otherwise, pour the rest of the coffee into a clean jar for storage.
Why Is My Keto Iced Coffee Coffee Bitter?
If you still feel your coffee is bitter, use less concentrate or coarse-ground coffee instead of fine-ground coffee.
Is Cold Brewed Coffee Stronger?
Using the same amount of coffee to water ratio, if you compare them to a regular hot coffee, yes. It is much stronger because of the long-brewing period compared to a traditional hot coffee dripping through coffee for a few seconds. Therefore you do need much less product to make a cold brew coffee.
In general, cold brew is always diluted, so you pick your strength. But depending on the concentrate you have made, it could be really strong. If you feel it is strong, add more ice or water.
How Can I Sweeten My Cold Brew Coffee?
With our sugar-free simple syrup or any of the homemade keto sweeteners, adding a little more sweetness to this refreshing drink is super easy.
How Long Is Brewed Coffee Good For?
I suggest keeping it in the fridge for a week. Not more. Since this method is straightforward to make, why have an old coffee in the refrigerator? Make fresh brew every few days and enjoy.
On the controversy, I know some people who keep their cold brew coffee in the fridge for up to 2 weeks without any issue. That is also possible if you do prefer.
Ensure you filter the coffee after 24 hours and store only already brewed coffee.
Can I Make Decaf Cold Brew Coffee?
Absolutely yes, and that was the first brewed coffee I have made.
At the time, I wanted to try it first; we only had coffee beans and no coffee grinder. And the only melted coffee I had at home was decaffeinated. I suggest making decaf coffee as well for you to enjoy the drink in the afternoon or as a beautiful summery evening drink.
Can Cold Brew Coffee Be Frozen?
You can freeze your coffee without a problem. It is a perfect method of storing and using your concentrate whenever you need it.
Just pour it into the ice molds and let it freeze.
Whenever you need your coffee, pick a few coffee cubes, pour water over it, add a pinch of low-carb milk and enjoy.
You can heat your cold brew and drink it as a regular coffee. You will still get all the benefits of cold brew, just a little milder.
Still much better than a regular hot coffee.
Will Cold Brew Coffee Break a Fast?
As long as you are not using sugar, milk, or bulletproof way, there should be not a single reason you would break a fast by drinking keto cold brew coffee.
Coffee + ice + water – perfect during your fasting time.
