Whether it’s holidays or not, colored deviled eggs are one of the most popular low-carb appetizers in the house.

Halloween recipes

Halloween spider web deviled eggs are a great scary Halloween food for your monster party. Spooky little egg spiders made from olives and scary-colored eggs with blueberries give you an incredible healthy Halloween finger food.

Add candied bacon, which looks like little old tree branches, chocolate fudge, spicy brownies, Nutella cookies decorated with black and orange sprinkles, and a bar of chocolate. Your Halloween party table will be completely full of goodies.

What are deviled eggs?

Deviled eggs are hard-boiled eggs cut in half and re-filled back using their egg yolks and other various ingredients. Those stuffed eggs are then used as an appetizer for most parties or events you attend.

Halloween deviled eggs

You might wonder why I have called them deviled when I am not stuffing them with anything.

As you probably know, the name Devil is also an evil creature, just a perfect fit for Halloween eggs.

So our eggs are a bit evil and deviled, dressing them up with spider-looking olives.

You can add them to our avocado egg salad to give them a perfect green base for the more realistic and hopefully spooky-looking plate.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS TO MAKE SPIDERWEB EGGS EASY RECIPE

First step: Boil your eggs

Boil your eggs to fully hard using your preferred method. You can use Instant Pot if you like, or just boil them on the stove.

Second step: Frozen wild berries

Place half a cup of frozen wild berries into a pot. I always use wild blueberries for natural coloring because they give your egg whites the best and the strongest dark color you can imagine.

And since wild berries are unavailable in our region, I ensure I get 4-5 kilos at the end of August when they are ready to be picked.

I then place them into a separate container and put them into the freezer for use throughout the year.

They are great whenever you need to bake a quick berry coffee cake. I also add them to the infused drinks or use them to color wild blueberries cheesecake.

Third step: Cook

Add boiling water and let it boil for another 10-15 minutes. Letting them cook further will help evaporate water, making your color dark and deep.

If you do not want the eggs to be too dark, just reduce the boiling time or do not boil them. Adding boiling water to the wild berries will already make the color dark.

Fourth step: Crack eggs

Once your hard-boiled eggs are cooked, remove eggs from a cooking pot. Place eggs to a large bowl and, with a teaspoon, lightly crack shell one by one throughout the whole egg.

Tap each egg gently so the shell does not entirely peel. Make sure your eggs are cracked so you get that instant and all-over spider-like eggs. The best is to look at the video for a better understanding.

Fifth step: Color eggs

Using a spoon, gently place the cracked eggs one at a time into the boiled blueberry cooking liquid. It is best if you layer in a large saucepan.

Once they are added to the water, slowly mix the water as the eggs cook. Ensure the colored water gets into each cracked egg.

Sixth step: Wait 15 minutes

This is the easiest step, I guess. Remove from heat and let stand for 15 minutes allowing the wild berries water to work its charm and color all the eggs.

You can, from time to time, gently mix them with a handle of a whisk, especially if the eggs are not covered fully. This will ensure that colored water gets into every crack of your eggs.

Seventh step: Peel

Let the eggs cool completely. Place all cracked eggs into a bowl and gently peel them all. They will be easy to peel. You will be surprised by those spider webs’ spooky-looking designs.

Wild berries color well. You might experience that your hands will get a bit of color. That happens every time I use wild blueberries. An excellent suggestion is to wash your hands with baking powder, and all the colour is immediately washed. Dry with paper towels, and you will be back to normal.

Eighth step: Prepare olives

For olive spiders, it is best to buy olives without seeds. It will be much easier to cut them into the exact shapes you want.

Take the olives and cut them in halves. Once they are cut, take some halves and cut each into a bit thicker slices. This will then be used for the legs of the spiders.

Ninth step: Cut eggs into half

All of the eggs you have peeled need to be cut in half. Place eggs in a single layer in a large plate you will decorate. If you will not use all, keep the remaining eggs uncut, showing the peeled eggs cobweb beautifully. You can see one egg in my photos.

Tenth step: Decorate spooky spider web eggs

It is the time to put it all together. You have already placed your sliced eggs on a plate you want to use for serving.

This is important because if you start moving the spider web eggs already decorated around, all of the legs from the spiders will fall, and you will have to do the process again and again.

Place one-half of the olive on top of each sliced egg. Slowly place three slices on each side of the half to form a spider-like looking little monster creature. You can use tweezers if you wish to.

The great idea is to use some spread, such as guacamole or egg salad, as the base and place keto-deviled eggs on top of it. This will also help the eggs to sit still.

TIPS AND TRICKS:

  • Spoon – do not use a wooden spoon in the process as it might color it.
  • Deviled – if you want to go for filled eggs, mash the yolks with sour cream or avocado
  • Taste – do not worry that they taste like blueberries. There are so few fruits in to prevent any other flavor.
  • Colored hands – use a medium bowl mixed with water and baking soda to wash your hands.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS:

Sides to serve with spider web eggs

Do you have to boil the eggs before?

It is necessary to boil your eggs before you start coloring. You need to crack them gently for tiny cracks. If they are not pre-boiled, the eggs will not stay together.

How to crack the shell of hard boiled eggs?

I gently used a small spoon to crack the egg shells in the recipe. You can also whack them gently on the side with the handle if you find it easier.

What food coloring can you use to color eggs naturally?

Marbled dye deviled eggs are beautiful as Halloween spider web eggs and do not have to be only scary. Use any of your berries to make beautiful pink, red, or yellow marbles. Whatever ingredients you would like to use.

You can also use food colouring, but I usually prefer those ingredients for natural colorings:

  • Yellow – Dried Curcuma
  • Orange – Red onion peels
  • Red – Beets
  • Green – Matcha or parsley
  • Purple – Red cabbage
  • Blue – Berries
  • Black food coloring – black cocoa powder, squid ink, or activated charcoal powder

How can you make proper deviled eggs?

As you see in my recipe, I have not taken yolks and have not made a special stuffing, but you certainly can.

Take all of the egg yolks and mix them either with mayo, yogurt, avocado, or whatever you wish. Using a teaspoon, fill each egg white with a mixture.

A perfect yolk mixture can be found in this keto deviled eggs recipe.

Deviled eggs

How to store spiderweb deviled eggs?

Once your eggs are peeled, you can store them in a container in the fridge. They should last for a week without any damage. Store them as a whole and cut them into halves only when ready to serve.

Can I make Halloween deviled eggs eyeballs using this recipe?

Using the same steps, you can decorate some as keto-deviled eyeball eggs. Cut whole olives into slices and place each piece on the halved egg. Then in the middle, you can add anything red to make it look like bloody eyes.

Some you buy in the supermarket are filled with red peppers instead of stones in the middle, which might be the easiest. Cut the slices and place them on eggs. Sprinkle with a bit of ketchup if you like for more spooky-looking Halloween finger food.

How to clean your hands from coloring?

I have blue hands whenever I use wild blueberries for cooking, baking, or coloring. This annoyed me since the color stayed for a few days, and I could never wash them with soap.

But then, one day, I tried washing them with baking powder. All of the color from my hands was gone in seconds.

Don’t forget this trick.

Now I use baking powder all the time. Every time I color anything. It works every single time.

Can you freeze deviled spider eggs?

I would not suggest freezing already-made spiderweb eggs. If you can freeze the whole cooked eggs already colored and use those for later preparation.
