These cheese puffs, made with just one and a half ingredients, are the ideal snack between meals. Since they’re suitable for anyone who wants to eat clean, these puffed cheese puffs are easy to prepare when you need them.
Cheese Snacks
Who doesn’t like cheese snacks? They are easy to prepare, take only a few minutes, and can be enjoyed day or night. They are ideal to eat as a snack between meals, to have with your movie night, or to serve as an appetizer at your planned party.
No matter which of our recipes you choose, Keto Popcorn Cheese Puffs, Cheese Chips, Cheese Bacon Chips, Crispy Keto Chaffle Chips, Goldfish Keto Cheese Crackers, or Fried Cheese Balls, they will all be a good choice for your Super Bowl Party or for a game night, and the cheese pops that we make in an Air Fryer should definitely be included in your selection.
Puffed Cheese
Puffed Cheese or Cheese Puffs is one of the most popular snacks in the world.
There are many options and many different types of puffed cheese recipes.
Some combine flour and other spices, while others are made with cheese only.
You can substitute flour with coconut or almond flour, and you can even find Cheetos replicas.
You can deep-fry them, bake them in the oven, or, if you prefer, use the recipe I’ve prepared for you.
I created a similar recipe using cheddar cheese and deep-frying it. The resulting cheese ball puffs, or fried cheese balls, are just as good and worth a try.
Recipe for Cheese Puffs
Puffed cheese, made in an air fryer, uses just one and a half ingredients and is quick and easy.
Egg White
Besides cheese, egg white is the second ingredient.
Egg white makes the puffed cheese expand while air frying, and it holds the shape for your perfect keto snack.
You have the option of whisking the egg white into stiff peaks or simply mixing in the liquid consistency with the cheese; in either case, you will end up with a perfect result, though the internal structure of the puffs will be different.
Although whipped eggs provide greater fluffiness, mixing liquid whites directly into the cheese creates a puff with more liquid inside.
Keto Cheese Puffs
The cheese puff chips are an ideal alternative thanks to their combination of egg white and pure cheese.
You won’t need any extra flour to make everything stick together.
Store-Bought Shredded Cheese
I should mention one thing, namely the grated cheese available in supermarkets.
Even though it is cheese, if you look at the labels you will see that shredded cheese usually contains some sort of starch; this keeps the shreds separate and prevents them from sticking together.
I always recommend buying a full block of cheese and grating it yourself at home, something that takes less than a few minutes.
As a result, you get pure cheese, and you know no other ingredients are involved.
Have I already said that this is a perfect Snack for any occasion?
What types of cheese to use for Cheese Puffs?
You can use any kind of hard cheese that you have at home in order to make perfect cheese puffs.
It all depends on your taste and preference. I have tried making them with Parmigiano, Edam, and Cheddar, and they all came out delicious. You can even mix different cheeses to create the perfect flavor combination.
Types of cheese to use in making cheese puffs are:
- Provolone Cheese
- Cheddar Cheese
- Asiago Cheese
- Emmental Cheese
- Parmigiano – Reggiano Cheese
- Gouda Cheese
- Edam Cheese
- Colby Jack
- Muenster Cheese
- Monterey Jack

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING KETO CHEESE PUFFS AIR FRYER
First Step: Prepare Ingredients
Prepare both cheese and egg whites.
The best option is to buy a hard cheese and shred it yourself, since store-bought shredded cheese contains starches.
Egg whites should be at room temperature for the best peaks while whisking.
Second Step: Whisk Egg White
Beat the egg whites until they reach a stiff peak.
You can skip this step and add liquid egg whites directly to the shredded cheese, which gives you more liquid texture inside the low-carb cheese puffs.
We prefer whisking the egg whites beforehand.
Third Step: Add and fold the egg white into the cheese
Add the whisked egg whites to the shredded cheese, then use a fork to gently fold them in.
Make sure all of the egg whites are thoroughly combined with the shredded cheese.
Fourth Step: Shape
Start shaping your cheese puffs. As you can see, I made a longer shape, but you can also shape them into balls of various sizes.
Keep in mind that the size will double while air frying.
The frying time also depends on the size of your cheese puffs.
Fifth Step: Place into your Air Fryer
Gently place each cheese puff into your air fryer.
Leave space between them as they expand.
You can also gently spray them with an oil of your choice.
Sixth Step: Air Fry
Air fry your cheese puffs following the instructions of your particular air fryer.
I used our Tefal Actifry; the best cheese puffs I got were on number two for 15 minutes.
Unfortunately, our Tefal Actifry does not show the temperature.
Seventh Step: Serve
Once your puffed cheese is ready, gently remove it from the air fryer and place it on a plate to serve.
You can serve them immediately or save them for later.
Tips and Tricks
- Egg Whites – Depending on your taste, you can whisk your egg whites or use them as a liquid. Whisking your egg whites beforehand gives you a fluffier consistency inside.
- Shape – Shape your cheese puffs however you like. You can make them even smaller if you wish. Please bear in mind that they do double in size while air frying.
- Air Fryer – Follow your air fryer’s instructions. Each air fryer is different, and the time and temperature might vary. I have used our Tefal Actifry, where 15 minutes on Number 2 worked the best.

How do you store Cheese Puffs?
You can leave our Cheese Puffs on a plate in the kitchen without a problem, usually for 2-3 days.
For longer, I store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
Can you freeze cheese Puffs?
Although I personally wouldn’t freeze puffed cheese, as it might change texture after refreezing, you can.
If you wish to, let them thaw naturally.
If they flatten, put them back in the air fryer for 3-4 minutes to regain their shape.

What does #2 on your air fryer equate to? Mine just uses temperatures. Air fryers don’t have instructions for random specific recipes.
Unfortunately my air fryer manual does not really states what temperature is settings 2 set for. It is meant for breaded snacks or chicken nuggets.
According to Tefal, the temp in the ActiFry is 180°C which is about 350°F. Hope that helps. BTW, as soon as I test it out, I’ll let you guys know.
Jazz
Thanks a lot for that Jazz.
I tried this and mine fell apart and ran into one big glob of cheese and eggs.
The actually do sometimes at the beginning, but then raise up again. Maybe try a bit higher temperature.
