The Best Keto Bread Recipe

Since we started our low-carb journey, I have ignored croutons and stopped using them for years. But as I have made our keto farmers bread and have realized this is the closest keto bread to your ordinary loaf, I started experimenting with it more and more.

We have already tried a few variations of dishes, such as eggy bread, which I used to love as a kid, and I will slowly post more here. But for the moment, let us stay with our crunchy keto croutons.

I have jumped to this recipe because I got another kitchen gadget I wanted from my husband – an Air Fryer.

The minute I got it, I got so excited that I started thinking of anything crispy I could make.

And I still need to read the instructions (not a good idea). I just switched it on and tried. I made chicken nuggets and those air fryer croutons all on the same day. Both of the dishes were so delicious. It has been since a game changer and go-to gadget for me. 

What Are Croutons?

Croutons are small pieces of bread coated with oil and roasted to crunchy perfection. You can make them from any bread you have available. The most important is that they need to be crispy to the bite. That’s what makes the difference.

As in so many recipes, the name croutons comes from the French name croûton or croûte, which means crust.

Croutons have been used for centuries to use the leftover bread, which was not anymore fresh to store for later.

Various herbs and spices are added to make them unique every time you make them.

Most of the time, they are cut into small square pieces, but you can make croutons also from smaller slices of your bread.

Did you know, Croutons have they National day as well? It is 13th of May. Do not forget to celebrate.

Are Croutons Keto Friendly?

They are entirely keto or low-carb if you are using keto bread. I have also seen some people making keto croutons out of fathead dough. You should be good to go if the ingredients are low-carb.

Can I Eat Croutons on Keto?

You can if you make them from keto bread. An oven or an air fryer is both perfect for making them. They are really easy to make, and I wonder why I have never made them.

Carbs In Croutons

The calculations vary depending on which bread you are using as a base. 

Using our bread, I have got you a lovely surprise concerning nutritional information.

Because the bread is made with oat fiber, which is pure fiber, you get 1 gram of carb and 4 grams of fiber per portion. One serving, which is three tablespoons, contains -3 grams of net carbs per portion if that exists. 

Are Those Homemade Croutons Gluten Free?

Our croutons in air fryer are entirely gluten-free, grain-free, and perfect for people with diabetes. As long as you are using gluten-free bread loaves that do not contain any wheat, you will have gluten free croutons from this recipe.

What Is Air Fryer?

For those not yet familiar with Air Fryer, it is one of the kitchen appliances you need if you are cooking all the time and need some help making the food fast and always in perfection.

It makes all your dishes unbelievably super quick, and crispy but with the least amount of oil possible. Sometimes, you do not even need to put oil in, and the food will still be crisp. And sometimes even 3 minutes is required to get small snacks done to perfection. Every dish you can imagine to fry could be done.

I know it takes up another space in your kitchen. And tell you frankly, I have been thinking of the Air Fryer for over the year already. I never bought it just because of space. And then the whole year was always looking for the smallest possible so that I could save some space, just in case I purchased one.

I have also made a simple basic Recipe for Air Fryer pork rinds, in case you want to look at it.

Since you probably own an Air Fryer, because you are reading this post, there are so many great recipes you can experiment with.

What Bread Do You Use For Low Carb Keto Croutons?

As already mentioned, you can use almost any keto bread at home. Made with almond flour, coconut flour, 90 second bread, whichever you prefer. In this recipe, I have used our farmers bread, which I have baked exclusively for this recipe.

I have tried to shape it into more of a square loaf so it is easier for me to cut square shapes. Also, I have not topped the loaf with additional fiber for finishing touches because I knew I would not be needed at the end.

How To Make Keto Croutons?

Let us get straight into the steps to toast up to the crunch keto-friendly croutons. All of the measurements are in the recipe card.

  • Olive Oil
  • Garlic
  • Marjoram

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS FOR AN EASY KETO CROUTONS RECIPE

First Step: Prepare Ingredients

As already mentioned, pick your favorite bread. Chop fresh herbs and get olive oil ready.

Second Step: Cut the Bread

Make sure your bread is cooled. Cut it into same-size slices and subsequently squares. As you see in the image, I have made smaller bread cubes, as I always love everything in more minor variations. For me, it tastes better as big chunks.

In this recipe, I have used half of the farmers bread loaf, or 200 grams to be precise.

Third Step: Add Spices

Place all of the croutons into a large bowl. Bowl should be spacious enough to mix in all the herbs and oil.

Add oil and all the ingredients, herbs of your choice, and a bit of salt and pepper. I have gone with dry garlic and marjoram. Therefore I have not added any salt because the dry garlic I have, is salty enough, and that is more than I need for the flavor.

With a big spatula, mix all of the croutons thoroughly. Remember to make sure the oil and herbs are spread evenly.

Fourth Step: Air Fryer

Depending on your Air Fryer, fill it up with your croutons. Make sure you only add one layer. Otherwise, they will not crisp fully.

Fifth Step: Extra Basket

I have purchased an additional basket for my Air Fryer to make 2 layers of food and, therefore, can make much more in one go. The advantage of a basket is that our croutons are done evenly from all sides.

Sixth Step: Fry

Switch the Air Fryer on. You do not need to add additional oil since you have already coated your croutons with oil.

My Air fryer is called Tefal Actifry Genius, and switching it to 10 minutes fully completes the croutons. I do not have a choice of setting up the temperature on mine, so you should use the settings you are used to for your Air fryer.

Seventh Step: Enjoy

After 10 minutes, the crunchy croutons are golden brown and ready to be served. Let them cool or serve them still hot or warm. It all depends on how you want to use them.

What Can You Use Low Carb Croutons For?

  • They are most famous as a topping for your caesar salad or creamy soups.
  • They go perfectly with tomatoes or creamy vegetable soups such as spinach, mushrooms, broccoli, or cauliflower.
  • Our sausage sauerkraut soup or roasted pumpkin soup are no exceptions.
  • Croutons could also be used for your stuffing for the next Thanksgiving dinner.
  • You can also grind them for your breadcrumbs needs.
  • And I must admit, I eat them just as they are instead of my keto snacks.
  • In France, for example, they still use them as a snack to go with a glass of wine.
  • They go perfectly on top of taco soup to enhance the flavor even more.
  • And, of course, keto French onion soup will be no exception.

Can You Make Garlic Keto Croutons In The Oven?

The oven is a perfect choice to make your croutons as well. Just heat the oven to approximately 180c Celsius or 350 Fahrenheit. Place them into the oven and let bake for about 15 minutes until fully crisp. It is good to toss them at least once in the oven. Make sure they are spread evenly and are not on top of each other. Otherwise, they will not be able to crisp fully.

How Do You Store Keto Croutons?

To keep croutons crunchy and crispy at all times, store them in an airtight container.

Because they are fully baked, they should stay perfect for 1-2 weeks. No need to keep them in the fridge. Just store them in your pantry or a kitchen desk.

Can You Freeze Keto Croutons?

I recommend not freezing the croutons. Once you take them out, they will not be crispy anymore.

But if you like to, place them back into the oven for a few minutes, and they should regain their crispiness in no time.
