Puffed Cheese
Puffed Cheese or Cheese Puffs is one of the most popular snacks worldwide.
There are various options and wide varieties for Puffed Cheese Recipes.
Some are mixed with flour and other spices, and some are made with cheese only.
In the Keto world, flour is replaced with coconut flour or almond flour. You can even find replicas of Keto Cheetos.
You can have them deep-fried, made in the oven, or a healthier option Air Fryer and here comes the recipe I have prepared for you.
I have made a similar recipe using Cheddar Cheese and deep-frying it. Those Cheese Ball Puffs or Fried Cheese Balls are just as perfect and worth giving a try.
Recipe for Cheese Puffs
Our Puffed Cheese made in an Air Fryer is made with only one and a half ingredients and is super quick and easy.
Egg White
Apart from cheese, our second half of the Ingredient is egg white.
Egg white makes the puffed cheese expand while air frying, and it holds the shape for your perfect keto snack.
You can whip up the egg white into a stiff peak, or you can just add the liquid consistency to the cheese. In both cases, you will get a perfect result but with different structures inside the puffs.
While whipped eggs give you more fluffiness, liquid egg whites mixed directly into the cheese result in more of a liquid melted cheese inside of a puff.
Keto Cheese Puffs
With an egg white and pure cheese combination, those Low Carb Cheese Puffs Chips are a perfect keto alternation.
You do not need additional flour to hold everything together. And of course, your carbohydrate intake is reduced to a complete minimum.
Is Cheese Keto?
Let us start with the main ingredient, and that is cheese.
At the beginning of a low carb or keto journey, most of you start researching what the ingredients allowed are and which has got the minimum to non-carbohydrates to stay within your limits.
And you, of course, look at the cheese and check if the cheese is keto.
I can tell you straight yes, cheese is fully keto. That is a block of cheese or mozzarella in a liquid. They all do not contain anything else but cheese.
Store-Bought Shredded Cheese
One caution I have to mention is the grated cheese you buy in the supermarkets.
Even though it is cheese, when you read the labels, you will find out that shredded cheese almost always contains some type of starch. It is used mainly for the shredded cheese to hold separately, so the shreds do not stick together.
I always suggest buying a whole block of cheese and shredding it yourself at home, which takes less than a few minutes.
As a result, you do have pure cheese only, and you know, there is no other ingredient involved, which might raise your blood sugar.
Store-Bough Cheese Puffs contains lots of carbohydrates, but our Cheese Puffs Recipe is entirely keto as it only contains cheese and an egg white. Bear in mind you are using your block of cheese you have shredded yourselves.
Our Cheese puffs contain 0 carbohydrates for the whole recipe.
One cheese puff, of course, comes to 0 carbs, 4 grams of protein, 2 grams of fat, and 33g of calories.
Did I already mention this is a perfect Keto Snack for any occasion?

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING KETO CHEESE PUFFS AIR FRYER
First Step: Prepare Ingredients
Prepare both cheese and egg whites.
It is best if you buy a hard cheese and shred the cheese yourself as a store-bought shredded cheese contains starches that are not suitable for our Keto lifestyle and the structure of the cheese puffs.
Egg whites should be at room temperature to give you the best peak while whisking.
Second Step: Whisk Egg White
Whisk your egg whites into a stiff peak.
You can skip this step and just add liquid egg whites into the shredded cheese, giving you more of the liquid texture inside the low-carb cheese puffs.
We prefer whisking the egg whites beforehand.
Third Step: Add and fold the egg white into the cheese
Add your whisk egg whites into the shredded cheese, and using a fork, start gently folding them into the cheese.
Make sure all of the egg whites are thoroughly combined with shredded cheese.
Fourth Step: Shape
Start shaping your cheese puffs. As you see, I have made more of a longer shape, but you can also shape them into balls in various sizes.
Keep in mind that the size will double while air frying.
The length of the frying also depends on the size of your cheese puffs.
Fifth Step: Place into your Air Fryer
Gently place each one of the cheese puffs into your air fryer.
Make sure you leave the space in between as they increase in size.
You can also gently spray them with an oil of your choice.
Sixth Step: Air Fry
Air fry your cheese puffs following up the instructions of your particular air fryer.
I have used our Tefal Actifry, where the best cheese puffs I got were on number two for 15 minutes.
Unfortunately, our Tefal Actifry does not show the temperature.
Seventh Step: Serve
Once your puffed cheese is ready, gently remove them from your air fryer and place it on a plate for serving.
You can serve them immediately or keep them for later on.
Tips and Tricks
- Egg Whites – depending on your taste, you can whisk your egg whites or use just a liquid form. Whisking your egg whites beforehand gives you more of a fluffy consistency inside.
- Shape – You can shape your cheese puffs however you like them. You can make them even much smaller if you wish. Please bear in mind that they do double in size while air frying.
- Air Fryer – Follow the instructions of your Air Fryer. Each air fryer is different, and the time and temperature might vary. I have used our Tefal Actifry, where 15 minutes on Number 2 worked the best.

How do you store Cheese Puffs?
Our Cheese Puffs can be left on a plate in the kitchen without a problem, usually for 2-3 days.

Can you freeze cheese Puffs?
Although I would personally not freeze Keto Puffed Cheese as they might change in texture after refreezing you can.
If you wish to, let them thaw naturally.
If they flatten, place them back into your air fryer for 3-4 minutes to regain their shape.

What does #2 on your air fryer equate to? Mine just uses temperatures. Air fryers don’t have instructions for random specific recipes.
Unfortunately my air fryer manual does not really states what temperature is settings 2 set for. It is meant for breaded snacks or chicken nuggets.
According to Tefal, the temp in the ActiFry is 180°C which is about 350°F. Hope that helps. BTW, as soon as I test it out, I’ll let you guys know.
Jazz
Thanks a lot for that Jazz.
I tried this and mine fell apart and ran into one big glob of cheese and eggs.
The actually do sometimes at the beginning, but then raise up again. Maybe try a bit higher temperature.
