Italian Flavors
Bologna (Imola near Bologna precisely) is the place, where Bolognese Sauce or Ragu Alla Bolognese was invented by chef Alberto Alvis.
Genoa is a town from where our Basil Pesto Comes.
And Italy is the place where we love to travel whenever time allows.
This beautiful country, makes me feel emotional the second we cross the borders.
Extra Healthy Celery
Trying to reproduce an Authentic Italian Bolognese Sauce, Celery was one veggie that needed to go in.
I have already taken carrots from the list because of trying to make this recipe fully Keto.
I just could not have taken out another vegetable even though celery is not my favorite.
Not favorite is a very light saying.
I hate celery.
I tried to love it so so much. I know how healthy it is and I have really tried.
I cooked with it, I juiced it. I tried it all, but after the first sip or a bite, this vegetable is so strong for my taste, that I just could not.
Vegetables
And I love vegetables. Veggies are my life. It’s only something with celery.
But
But as I have made this ragu bolognese sauce and added celery, I have chopped them really tiny as you can see on the video.
Do you know what the surprise is?
I loved the sauce so much that I have not even tasted celery.
First time in my life I have eaten something with celery and loved it.
Actually went crazy about it.
There is nothing else stopping you now, from making your own sauce at home.
Overnight Bolognese Flavors
The flavor of this authentic Bolognese Sauce intensifies overnight like magic.

- Stuffed Bell Peppers
- Stuffed Zucchini Mini Bites
- Eggplant Boats
I have calculated it precisely to the exact point.
One serving, which is ½ Cup or 125g of this Keto Bolognese Sauce, contains 5g of Carbs with 2 grams of fiber, giving you a total of 3g Net Carbs.
If you do read the calculations above, our Keto Bolognese Sauce is fully Keto.
Some might say, that anything with tomato sauce is considered more of a Low Carb, but if you do follow the servings exactly, you can still enjoy Keto Lifestyle with Tomato sauces or anything made with it.
Keto Substitutions for Bolognese sauce
As I have mentioned about dislike of Celery, you might have different food preferences in your life as well and therefore I am suggesting few substitutions:
- Ground Pork – could be used instead of Beef
- Tomatoes – easily replace canned tomato sauce with fresh tomatoes, which you can blend after cooking. You can also use tomato powder if available.
- Celery – even though I do love celery in this recipe you are more than welcome to replace it with zucchini. I would only suggest adding zucchini towards the end as they really soften fast and might get mushy.
- Tomato Sauce – can be swapped with Tomato paste. In this instance use half the amount only.
- Spiciness – add chili flakes for an extra spicy touch.
What are the best Keto Pasta Alternatives for Bolognese Sauce?

STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTION FOR AUTHENTIC KETO BOLOGNESE SAUCE RAGU
First Step: Ingredients
First of all, prepare all of your ingredients.
It is great if you can cut it all into small cubes and prepare all of the ingredients in separate glasses so your cooking would only take a few minutes.
For the minced meat, I have used ground beef, but you could swap it for Pork or whatever meat you prefer.
Celery is also cut into small cubes and could be exchanged for zucchini in case you preferred that.
Oregano and Marjoram are freshly cut, but in case you do not have them available you can use dried herbs as well.
Second Step: Onion & Garlic
Using a cooking pot, start with browning your onion with 1 Tablespoon of Olive oil.
When the onion is caramelised halfway, add garlic and cook it for another few minutes.
Third Step: Bacon & Minced Meat
Add your bacon which you have cut into small cubes and your minced meat.
Mix it together and cook for approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
Cover the pot so the meat and bacon cook properly.
Fourth Step: Celery & Herbs
Once your minced meat and bacon are cooked for approximately 15 minutes add celery and all the herbs as well as salt and pepper.
Mix together and cook for another 10 minutes.
Fifth Step: Tomato Sauce & Heavy Cream
When everything is cooked add tomato sauce together with heavy cream and mix all properly.
Sixth Step: Cook
Cover with the top and cook it for another 40 minutes.
Tips and Tricks

A perfect way to store our Bolognese Sauce is in the refrigerator inside Mason Jars.
Leave the amount you want to use for the next 2-3 days and everything else store in the freezer.

Bolognaise sauce is delicious! I used a silicone pat to cook the lasagna “noodles” mixture on. It took longer than 10 minutes.
But I will make this again because once all layered and baked it was so good. I did add a Tablespoon of tomato paste and half cup of water to the sauce.
So happy you have enjoyed it.
