What is Casserole?
Casserole or a casserole dish, is in general, a one-pot meal. It is a dish, where everything is made and assembled in one pot. The casserole is in most cases a large pan, deep in size and oven safe. Casserole dishes are perfect for a quick and easy dinner.

Story of our Cheesy Cabbage Beef Keto Casserole
Met a friend. Did not know what to cook for dinner. She suggested this cabbage dish, which she had made the day before. After listening to her recipe and already in my head turning it into something really delicious, I immediately wanted to have a bite.
Straight went to the shop to buy some ingredients and went on cooking. First I have made it a bit different, more complicated. I have made it all in a big pot and then moved it into a casserole to bake the cheese in the oven. This made quite a lot of mess in the kitchen which I do not really like.
But guess what.
My family loved it. They really said it was extremely good.
And the week later, when I asked my husband, what shall I cook for dinner, he suggested the casserole dish from last week, since it was so good.
That was an immediate sign, I have to make this recipe for all of you, so everyone can enjoy it. Not only my family. And here you go.

Our Cheesy Cabbage Beef Keto Casserole was born.
Cast Iron or Skillet
Since I have purchased our Skillet, it has very fast become my one and only, the most important pot in our kitchen.
I so love it for various reasons:
- Love the look, which is very vital for my photography
- Never goes old.
- You can hardly really destroy it.
- You can cook and bake almost anything in, even cakes.
- Perfect for cooking on the stove and then finishing the dish in the oven. No need for more pots
- The perfect pot for serving – it always looks good.
Does it look like I am in love with our Skillet?
Well, You are right. I am. I love it so so much.
And this is the one and only pot I have chosen to make our Keto Casserole dish in.

How to make Keto Cabbage Beef Casserole?
Kitchen tools you might need:
Ingredients you need:
- Beef
- Fresh Cabbage
- Onion
- Mushrooms
- Tomato sauce
- Mozzarella
- Spice blend
My Spice Blend consists of:

STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS ON THE BEST CHEESY KETO CASSEROLE EVER
First Step: Prepare ingredients
Prepare all of the ingredients.
Cut meat into small pieces, which will help you to cook the beef fully tender.
Slice the cabbage into the thinnest possible slices. This will help in the end result greatly.
Mushrooms should also be cut into small tiny pieces, so they are easily spread over the dish.
Add spices all into one bowl, for easier cooking.
And do not forget to grain the mozzarella or your favorite cheese with a grater.

Second Step: Brown Onions
Heat up the skillet and add oil. Once the oil is hot, add onions and let them caramelize.

Third Step: Add beef
Once the onions are cooked, add pieces of beef and cook for approximately 10 minutes, until all of the sides of the beef pieces are cooked.

Fourth Step: Add mushrooms
Once the meat is brown from all the sides, add mushrooms cut into small pieces and cook for another 5-10 minutes.

Fifth Step: Spices
When it is time to add spices, make sure you switch off the cooking process for this step.
Some spices, especially sweet paprika, tend to burn very fast and when added into cooking meat, they can change the taste. They become really bitter.
Once you add all the spices, mix them fully into the meat and mushrooms.

Sixth Step: Tomato sauce and mix
At the same time add the tomato sauce and mix fully. There is no need to add any of the liquid, be it the water of broth, since cooking this casserole dish for longer, meat and cabbage will add more moisture in, which will be enough for the dish.

Seventh Step: Add Cabbage and cook
Now is the time to switch the heat on again. When the meat, spices, and sauce are fully mixed, add on top sliced cabbage, cover with the lid, set the cooking to medium-low and let it cook for approximately one hour.
Depending on your beef sizes, you can adjust the cooking time accordingly.

Eight Step: Fully Mix
After approximately one hour, mix all of the cabbage together with meat and check if the meat is tender enough. If you are more of a visual person, check our video with full steps.

Ninth Step: Cheese and Bake
Once all of the cabbage is fully mixed together with beef, top it up with grated mozzarella and place it into the oven for 10 – 15 minutes. Here you only need for the mozzarella to melt and brown a bit. Watch out, as baking cheese can turn from beautiful melted to burned in minutes.

Tips and Tricks
- Beef Size – Depending on the size of the beef, you can adjust your cooking time. Smaller the pieces – the shorter cooking time it requires. If you are not sure, check the tenderness of the meat before adding the cheese.
- Mushrooms – if you do not have fresh, you can use dried mushrooms as well.
- Cheese – I have used Mozzarella, but you can choose whatever cheese you like
- Cheese Grater – Make sure you always buy a whole block of cheese and Grate that at home. First of all, you will get the really freshest grated cheese you can get. Second, most of the already grated cheese in the supermarkets are filled with starches, so the cheese does not get stuck to one another
- Cabbage – Slice the cabbage onto the thinnest slices you manage. This will help in taste enormously
- Spices – My blend is the spices, I use the most, but you can experiment with spices you like.
- Cheese baking in the oven – be careful and watch it. It can turn from beautifully melted cheese to burned cheese in minutes.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Is Cabbage Keto Friendly?
Cabbage is one of the greatest Keto vegetables to prepare your dishes with. It is not only inexpensive but very low in carbohydrates and perfect in various dishes.
By cooking fresh cabbage, you get that tiny sweet taste of it, which adds into the flavors of whatever low carb dish you choose.
It is a perfect vegetable to make the stuffing, you can experiment and make some Keto Cabbage Rolls.
It is so versatile, that it could be a perfect replacement for rice or pasta in your dishes.
There are different varieties of Cabbage, but the green one has fewer carbs than the purple for example.
Even better is a Sauerkraut, which is a Fermented Cabbage. I cook a lot with sauerkraut. You can have a look at our Keto Sausage Sauerkraut Soup, which is a must for Christmas. Also, a great Keto Dinner is Low Carb Sauerkraut Chicken, which I am actually making tonight.
Can you make this a Ground Beef Keto Recipe?
You can certainly replace the beef pieces with minced meat in this recipe if you prefer. Your cooking time would certainly be a bit less. I would even suggest leaving it to cook for only 30 minutes.
What spices are best for a Casserole dish?
It really depends on what exactly casserole are you planning to make. Mexican? Add more Mexican spices. Indian? Add more of the Indian nature spices. It really is entirely up to you.
In our case, I love to add sweet paprika to most of my dishes together with Turmeric. I feel those add a great flavor to the casseroles.
Adding ginger, for example, is not really in our daily cooking, because my daughter is not really fond of this spice, but a small amount is fully invisible and mixed together with other spices, nobody will ever know.
The best is to store a One Pan Keto Cabbage Casserole in the fridge, in the same skillet dish you have baked it in. You do not have to transport it into another dish unless it does not fit into the refrigerator.
You can store it for up to 2-3 days. I would not suggest longer.
You can certainly freeze it. Bear in mind, that it would be best to store it in a sealed container.
Once you are ready to eat, take it out of the freezer the night before. Place it in the refrigerator, where it will slowly unfreeze.
Once ready to serve, place it into a smaller casserole dish and straight into the oven until fully warm. You can add freshly grated cheese or dried onion if you prefer for additional freshness.
