Keto BBQ Sauce

I had been making sugar-free and low-carb sauces at home when I started practicing a low carb lifestyle, and it is a great decision and life-saver. Making this low carb BBQ sauce is one of my easiest recipes. I have been using this sauce for weeks, which is something different and feels more authentic than the store-bought ones.

Sure you can make a no sugar BBQ sauce without cooking, which is also what other people do. But I prefer taking them to a simmer because I like the flavor better when cooked.

How To Make Sugar Free BBQ Sauce Recipe

Let me show you how this healthy recipe is quickly done with only simple steps. Try this recipe and see how much you can save for doing it at home. Use your preferred measurements for the ingredients, and you will be shocked at how good they will turn out.

Kitchen Gadgets Needed:

  • Cooking Pot: Use to combine and simmer all the ingredients for the sauce.
  • Whisk: Whisk is for stirring and blending. It helps make sure the sauce ingredients mix well in the pot.
  • Baking Spatula: Use it to scrape the sides of the pot and ensure you get every bit of the delicious sauce out.
  • Glass Storage Container: Place all ingredients in small glass containers for clean and organized cooking.

Ingredients Needed:

  • Sugar-Free Ketchup: As a tomato-based sauce, it will give the sauce a sweet and tangy flavor and it gives the sauce thickness and a classic taste.
  • Worcestershire Sauce: If you have a gluten-free Worcestershire sauce available at home, it is better to use it for a savory and umami kick to your BBQ sauce.
  • Brown Sweetener: Use brown sweetener with no additivesand it will make your sauce sweet without the sugar.
  • Vinegar: An apple cider vinegar is good for balancing out the sweetness and enhancing the overall flavor.
  • Tabasco: Tabasco or any spicy sauce adds a bit of heat and spiciness to BBQ sauce.
  • Mustard: This ingredient cuts through the sweetness and adds some zesty. Just a tablespoon is enough.
  • Smoked Paprika: If you want that smokey flavor for your sauce, you can use this instead of actual smoke.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS TO KETO SUGAR-FREE BBQ SAUCE

First Step: Prepare All The Ingredients

The first thing to do is prepare all your ingredients. For the Worcestershire sauce, you can use a store-bought one, but if you have made one at home, it is always the best choice for recipes like this.

If you do not have ketchup ready, a sugar-free tomato sauce is okay, or make your own by blending tomatoes using fresh tomato, dried tomatoes, or tomato powder.

For the seasoning, mix and match garlic powder, onion powder, or paprika to suit your taste preference for the BBQ sauce.

Second Step: Combine All The Ingredients

Mix the ingredients in a cooking pot on medium heat, starting with the Worcestershire sauce and then add brown sugar, tabasco, and vinegar.

Mix with a whisk until they are thoroughly combined. Make sure that you are using medium heat only. Once the first ingredients are combined, you can now add the ketchup or tomato sauce.

Third Step: Add Mustard and Mix

Add the mustard after the ketchup, and then mix again. You can use any mixing tool, but a whisk is perfect for easily mixing the thick ingredients and combining them with the runny ones.

Simmer the sauce for a minute for the ingredients to combine.

Fourth Step: Add Smoked Paprika

The last to go is the smoked paprika. Add it in, wait for it to dissolve, and mix again for the last time, then cook.

Bring the sauce to a boil and cook for a few minutes until the sauce starts getting thicker.

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR MAKING THIS LOW CARB SAUCE:

  • Sweetener – pick a reliable sugar substitute to maintain sweetness without using sugar. Options like erythritol, stevia powder, or monk fruit sweeteners work well.
  • Ketchup – look for a sugar free ketchup that has no added sugar as a base to keep the overall sugar content in check.
  • Whisk – using a whisk to mix the sauce is very helpful, especially for thick ingredients.
  • Smoked paprika – use smoked paprika for the smokey flavor without relying on additives with high carbs. It is a good substitute for liquid smoke; most people use or try cayenne pepper if it is unavailable.
  • Vinegar – you can use any vinegar of your choice, but an apple cider is better for healthier purposes. White vinegar is also okay, but some may contain additives or net carbs, and we do not want that.

Can I Use Tomato Paste Instead Of Ketchup?

Yes, you can use tomato paste as a base for making BBQ sauce instead of ketchup. However, remember that tomato paste is more concentrated and less sweet than ketchup, so you may need to adjust the other ingredients to achieve the desired flavor profile.

How Do I Store BBQ Sauce?

You can refrigerate your BBQ sauce for storage or let it sit in a container jar in the fridge when not used, as it helps slow down the growth of bacteria and preserves the quality of the sauce. Do the same, even if you made a large batch or good quantity for a few months of use.

If you plan to store the BBQ sauce for an extended period, consider freezing it. To do this, let the sauce cool to room temperature, then transfer it to a freezer-safe container, leaving some space for expansion. Just make sure the container is tightly sealed to prevent freezer burn.

If you will use it, you can thaw it in the refrigerator and stir it before reheating if necessary.
