Did you know you can make Keto Sprinkles at home?

Those Homemade Sugar–Free Keto Sprinkles are super easy to make and will last forever in a glass container. Use them on any of your cookies, cupcakes or even as a decoration for Keto Muesli Granola.

Sugar-Free Sprinkles

I have already used them on our Christmas Tree Cupcakes, Chocolate Covered Strawberries, and Gingerbread Cookies. Still, you can use them on anything you can imagine, especially when kids are involved. They will love sprinkling them on their own.

DIY Sprinkles

The best part about making gluten-free sprinkles is that you can make them using the leftovers from our coconut recipes.

First, you make shredded coconut from whole coconuts. Use those coconut shreds to make coconut milk

Squeeze all the liquid for milk, and whatever you have left can be used for baking sprinkles. They will already be moist, and therefore, you just need coloring and straight into the oven for drying. How awesome is that?

And whatever you will not use for making sprinkles can go into preparing the best Coconut Ice Cream

Why you need to make homemade sugar-free sprinkles

Because they are:

  • Easy to make
  • So cheap compared to the store-bought ones
  • They last for a very long time
  • Easy to store
  • Crunchy
  • Colorful
  • Natural
  • Zero carbs
  • Eye-catching
  • Gluten-free
  • Grain-free

Edible Sprinkles

Homemade Sugar-Free Keto Sprinkles has been on my list for as long as I can remember.

Till now, every time we have made some cupcakes or cookies for holidays, we have made everything low-carb except the sprinkles. I used to buy those little tiny balls and only put a few pieces, so all the cookies or cupcakes have that beautiful end touch.

Why?

Well, as we all first need to approve our food with the look of it, that is the most crucial point, and it is the first sign where we decide if we like it or not.

And with our kids, this is 300% true. If they like the look, they will most probably have a try at them. But if it does not look nice, they do not even bother to try them.

Are sprinkles keto?

Regular sprinkles are very far from keto. After correctly studying the carbohydrate intake, I realized that regular sprinkles contain 5 grams of carbohydrates for a tiny teaspoon. And I always thought a little bit was ok.
The good news, our sugar-free keto sprinkles are zero carbs, healthy, and made with only 2 ingredients.

Do sprinkles have carbs?

Regular sprinkles are mostly made with pure colored sugar and some additional ingredients.
Our low-carb sprinkles recipe contains no carbohydrates and no sugar or sweetener. They are made purely from fresh coconuts.

Do sugar-free sprinkles exist?

Nowadays, you can find some stores already selling sugar-free sprinkles. But, they are so expensive that if I look at our recipe and know I can store them for months to go, I would make my own.

And as I am always ready and thoroughly excited about all the experiments, I have decided to go entirely natural.

Naturally colored Keto Sprinkles

Natural coloring for Keto Recipes

As I have already made natural coloring with our Rainbow Chia Pudding and Sugar-Free Gummy Bears, I have decided to give it a try. And those results are outstanding. With Curcumin or Turmeric, for example, I have made 2 colors. Little Curcumin turns them into lovely yellow. The more Curcumin you use, you get a beautiful Orange Halloween color.

Following all of the ways you can naturally color and mix your sugar-free sprinkles, you can beautifully decorate and make ice cream sprinkles, cake decorating sprinkles, cupcakes with sprinkles, donuts with sprinkles, cookie sprinkles, birthday sprinkles, and much more.

How to naturally color Keto Sugar-Free Sprinkles?

Using your food as a natural coloring is the easiest way to start.

I have used Red, Pink, and Purple, the same as with our Rainbow Low Carb Chia Pudding, where I boiled frozen berries until most of the liquid evaporated. If you like the color, but it is a bit thick, do not worry about adding a few drops of water, which will spread the color evenly. Then add drop by drop into a bowl of white Coconut flakes. In the end, they go to the oven for drying.

Yellow and Orange, I have used Turmeric, as already mentioned. Mix the powder with a bit of water and add to the coconut flakes. Adding a few drops results in a lovely bright yellow color, and a bit more colors it into a gorgeous Orange.

For a Green Color, you can use either Spirulina or Matcha Tea Powder, which comes a bit darker green. Or you can boil Spinach leaves in a tiny amount of water to get a brighter green color.

For a Blue Turquoise color, I had to research and found a great idea from Whole New Mum, where she wrote a whole blog about it. What a perfect tip.

To summarize natural coloring for Rainbow sprinkles:

  • Red Sprinkles – Strawberries
  • Pink Sprinkles – Raspberries
  • Purple Sprinkles – Blueberries
  • Magenta Sprinkles – Beetroot
  • Yellow Sprinkles – Turmeric, Saffron
  • Orange Sprinkles – lots of Turmeric, Dry Paprika Powder
  • Green Sprinkles – Spirulina, Matcha Tea Powder, or boiled spinach leaves
  • Blue Sprinkles – Red cabbage with baking soda
  • Turquoise Sprinkles – Mix blue and green
  • Black Sprinkles – black cocoa powder, squid ink, or activated charcoal powder

Best Keto Friendly Bulk Sprinkles

I have placed each colored sprinkles into a small glass jar to use in the future.

In that way, you have a jar of sprinkles with each color. You can mix and match the colors for any upcoming occasion.

I have already made Halloween Sprinkles, where you mix only the orange, purple and red colors.

And then, I made another lighter version for Christmas, adding all the colors together plus white original shredded Coconut. Perfect for decorating gingerbread village.

I will still make a third mix for Easter, where I will probably only mix light colors like yellow, turquoise, white, and pink.

And the 4th mixture for Valentine with only red, pink, and white Sprinkles. O my. I can not wait for all the baking now.

To make it a bit more clear also for me in the future, here it goes:

A mixture of Homemade Sugar-Free Keto Sprinkles colors:

  • Valentines Sprinkles –  Red, Pink, White
  • St. Partic’s Sprinkles – all of the green colors together
  • Easter Sprinkles –  Yellow, Turquoise, White, Pink
  • Mother’s Day Sprinkles – Red and Pink
  • Independence Day Sprinkles – Blue, White, and Red
  • Halloween Sprinkles –  Black, Orange, Purple, Red
  • Fall Sprinkles – Orange, Purple, Red
  • Christmas Sprinkles – Red, Green, White
  • New Years Eve Sprinkles – all the colors together
  • Birthday Cake Sprinkles – depending on the theme of the birthday decoration

Third Step: Cook the colors

For homemade coloring, I have picked berries and turmeric.

As you see in the video, I used frozen blueberries and fresh raspberries, which I cooked until most of the water evaporated.

I let them run through the sieve to get rid of the little seeds and prepared the colored liquid.

The exact steps you can use for various other natural colors I have described in the article above.

I mixed turmeric with a few drops of water for the yellow and orange color.

Fourth Step: Color your coconut shreds

Into each bowl, add your food coloring. Mix fully until you get the color you have been looking for.

If the colors are not spreading evenly, add a few drops of water and mix again.

Fifth Step: Bake

Prepare your baking sheet covered with parchment paper.

On it, place each colored sprinkles in separate lines with space in between. It will be later on much easier to separate the colors.

Place into the oven and bake for 10 to 15 minutes.

After that, switch the oven off, gently mix the sprinkles so the moist one gets on top, and let it dry and cool inside the oven.

This will help in proper dryness and the crunchiness of keto sprinkles.

Tips and Tricks:

  • Size of coconut shreds – use the shreds or flakes which are a bit thicker if you are looking for jimmies-style sprinkles. I have also used completely shredded coconut, which gives you more of a colored powder.
  • Color too thick – If you like the color, but it is a bit thick, do not worry about adding a few drops of water, which will spread the color evenly. And in the end, they go to the oven for drying.
  • Wet Coconut shreds – Once you are coloring, do not worry if the coconuts are a bit wet. We will dry them in the oven to get the perfectly crunchy sprinkles, which are also great for storing.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Substitute for food coloring

If you are not ready to start preparing your homemade colors, you can pick one of the store-bought food colors. Just make sure they are free from artificial dying.

How do you store homemade sugar-free sprinkles?

Once you are confident that all of the sprinkles are fully dry, place them individually into a small glass container and store them in your pantry.

That way, you can mix the colors for whatever occasion you will bake. Be it birthdays, Christmas, Valentines, Halloween, or anything else.

Do Sprinkles expire?

Our sugar-free sprinkles can be stored for at least 6 to 8 months. I still have some from a year and a half, and they are still great to the taste and look.

But if they expire? I am sure they do, especially after more than a year. I would make a few colors once a year and use them throughout.

Can you freeze colorful coconut sprinkles?

You can undoubtedly freeze almost anything, and those coconut sprinkles as well.

But as they are ideally stored in your pantry for a long time, there is no need to fill up your freezer with unnecessary ingredients.

  1. You must have been reading my mind! I have a recipe for Italian ricotta cookies that I make for Christmas and was wondering what to do about the colored sprinkles (experimenting to convert from AP flour). Now I know!

    • Dear Monica,

This is exactly how excited I was when I made them. And then I have made like 10 different colors. And we put them onto anything. Yogurt, Waffles, Crepes, onto a cacao, almond milk.

      Happy you like them

      Have a great day

    • They do not taste after the coconut Brittany. I guess, because of additionally baking them and sprinkling only a bit on cupcakes or anything else, the flavor kind of disappears.
